The key goal of CPB is the study of polymers and polymeric systems designed for biomedical application. In this context, our main topics of interest are:
- identification and study (e.g. physicochemical and toxicological properties) of synthetic and naturally occurring macromolecules (either biologically active or not) with interest as: a) water-soluble polymeric carriers, b) targeting moieties, c) matrixes for controlled drug delivery and d) particulate drug carrier systems, for improved drug pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, immunological properties or therapeutic efficacy.
- synthesis or semi-synthesis of new polymers with improved properties (e.g. decreased toxicity, biodegradability or biocompatibility, tailored charge and/or hydrophobicity).
- bioconjugate and pro-drug chemistry, including strategies to improve yield while retaining biological activity.
